The risk of credit-card minimum payments
Minimum payments can fall as the balance falls, stretching repayment for years. A fixed amount above the minimum is usually more effective.
Why minimums are dangerous
A percentage-based minimum shrinks with the balance. If the payment is close to monthly interest, very little principal is repaid. Late fees or new purchases make the path worse.
A safer test
Compare the disclosed minimum with a fixed monthly payment. If a payment does not exceed current monthly interest, the balance will not amortise.
