Simple interest vs compound interest

Simple interest is calculated only on principal. Compound interest is calculated on principal plus prior interest, creating accelerating growth or debt.

Simple interest

I = P × r × t. The interest base does not change.

Compound interest

A = P(1 + r/n)nt. More frequent compounding slightly increases the effective yield when the nominal rate is unchanged.
